"(...) First-hand experience shows that the groups of adult educators and continuing educators are highly heterogeneous. Professionalisation is very hard to achieve in this context. This paper presents a new, dynamic and open concept of profession, based on some thoughts about professional cultures of adult education and continuing education. It is argued that the heterogeneous structure of adult education can be described adequately by understanding it as a system of various social worlds within the profession. These social worlds are based on professional cultures in terms of patterns of perception, values, attitudes, self-image, image of others, etc. Describing diverse professional cultures allows exploring the converging and diverging lines of these patterns. Understanding professional cultures facilitates addressing the specific needs of adult educators in their various settings in terms of continuing education and the development of competences. (...)"
